Postpartum: Cultivating Calm

Soooo... what is the fourth trimester? The fourth trimester is your baby's first three months of life. What purpose does a doula serve during this time?  Jamilla Walker, owner of The Labor Ladies and founder of Integrated Birth & Family Alliance, describes the role of a postpartum doula very well: "Be the wife every woman wishes she had." Postpartum care in the United States of America isn't enough. Women are pressured to return to work, parenting is not respected, postpartum mood disorders are at an all time high (and often go unreported), and standardized long-term postpartum care is nonexistent.

This is where your postpartum doula comes in. As silly as this may seem, your postpartum doula is your magical fairy who ensures completion of everything you want and need. Postpartum doulas cultivate calm and validate rest. They assist with breastfeeding, provide referrals, and handle household management. They run errands and assist with other children. Your postpartum doula can and will be the emotional and physical support you need to encourage you during your transition.

In the simplest of terms: postpartum doulas mother the mother. Even Wonder Woman deserves a rest.
